Martellus Bennett is doing his share with helping children of color think beyond  the ball. The former NFL player and super bowl champion is making his impact with his children's book “Dear Black Boy” by  shaping the minds of  black youth, encouraging them to explore their talents outside of sports.  The book was derived from Bennett's commitment to addressing and erasing social stereotypes by empowering black boys to expand their minds. In the heart of  Dear Black Boy is a voice to empower its readers to think outside of social norms, dream big and climb the ladder of greatness.

It seems like a write of passage for young black boys to spend their childhood joining various sports with big dreams to make it to the NBA or NFL. Getting drafted by a professional sports league  is the focal point for many blacks youth and their parents.

However, the fact remains that only 1% of college football Athlete's  will be selected to go pro. With odds like this, it is imperative for parents to shift the minds of their children to searching for their unique gifts outside of sports.

It is high time that African American children are nurtured to develop their other talents. The world needs more doctors, lawyers, technicians, and politicians of color.  Representation in these fields will no only shape the future reality for the black community but also change the world. Parents should not put expanding their child’s career opportunities to the side.  Allowing a child to engage in diverse sectors is proven to be invaluable.

When will the world begin to see black boys beyond their athletic abilities? When black boys begin to prove their skills outside of sports on a grander scale. The seed planting begins at home with words of encouragement  while the watering takes place as you engage your child in various activities and allow them to explore their potential. In due season those trees will bear fruit.

Dear Black Boy is a book for the ages. Martellus Bennett did stellar job explaining the various challenges black boys will face  while navigating through life, and how to overcome sterotypes in a metaphoric melody. I encourage you to add this book to your child’s collection and refer it to anyone you know raising a black boy.
